Students at the Integrity Education Centre enjoy the Art Smart presentation and project with art docent from the Phoenix Art Museum Fran Goldstein (center). Pictured from left; Donavon Gies, Alaina Bright and Killian Berkebile craft Picturing Arizona pieces. This program compliments Ms. Lane's and Ms. Davis' fourth through sixth-graders studies of Arizona. It also enhances the Arizona history curriculum with an exploration of history, geography and the diversity of the state through many an artists' eyes. Art Smart with Integrity By Evelyn Gonzalez-Sanchez and Killian Berkebile Sixth-graders, Integrity Education Centre Do you know what a docent is? On September 13, 2012 a docent came to Integrity Education Centre. A docent means a teacher or someone that leads. Her name is Fran Goldstein and she is with the Phoenix Art Museum. Ms. Goldstein loves her job and she gets to meet lots of children. Ms. Goldstein loves to answer questions and she has been a volunteer for 7 years at the Phoenix Art Museum. Ms. Goldstein volunteers because she appreciates the work the people did. She shows people art and gives them tours of the museum. One thing she does not like about her job is getting lost sometimes. Students learned a lot and liked it when she told us about pictures that different artist painted. She also told us about interesting things about the paintings and spoke of contrast, color, contours and shapes. Many of the paintings included the ancient people, Native Americans, spanish colonies, missionaries, ranchers, cowboys and frontiers. We learned that today some artist go up in a helicopter and take pictures about what they want to paint. Ms. Goldstein also showed us jewels that were made of stone. The color of the stone on the jewel was a blue color and it looked like a flower on one of them. She also told us about some ancient people that traded with one other. In one painting a woman wore a mole on the face to make her seemmore attractive. Ms. Goldstein told us about some shapes in the paintings that made art either realistic or abstract. The best part was when she told us we were going to do art project called Picturing Arizona that included color, change, contrast, contour and culture. For more information visit www.phxart.org
